Our Name and History

Our church has a history extending more than 100 years, we are proud to be the next chapter.

The First Church On Lake

1892: Lake Avenue Baptist Church Begins…

In 1892 a group of Christians gathered together to pray over the possibility of starting a new church in the growing Bessemer neighborhood. After spending time in prayer the small group of faithful believers began to organize and gather as a church. In a few years time they would grow and grow ultimately purchasing a plot of land on 1345 Lake Ave., and begin to build the first church on Lake Ave.

From Small Beginnings

The Church Began to Grow…

After decades of faithful ministry in Pueblo the church membership grew as high as 600! With the increased growth of the church more seating was needed and the church underwent a major reconstruction. The building took on its current shape and expanded significantly from its orginal build. Unfortunately the church would experience several challenges and closed its doors permanently in 2017.

Our Next Chapter

After years of closed doors, the church at 1345 Lake Ave, would soon see new life! In 2022 two families moved to Pueblo to begin the process of starting a new church. Beginning with a Tuesday night prayer meeting, two young men, Pastor Scott Godinez, and Dakota West met to pray for this new church every Tuesday. In time the small prayer meeting grew and grew eventually leading to the first Sunday morning service on October 15th, 2023.

A Focus On Community

Welcoming Environment

We changed our name to emphasize a focus on community. This means when you come to Lake Avenue, you can expect a diverse population that reflects the same diversity across Pueblo.

For the community

Everything we do, everything we have, we want to use to the benefit of the gospel proclamation in our local community. This means partnerships with schools, nonprofits and anyone else we can connect with to support our neighbors.

Bessemer Proud

When we changed our name to Lake Avenue Community Church we did it on purpose. We are proud of our community and wanted to keep the name Lake Avenue, a reminder of our history, and an indicator of our location in Bessemer.
